Our method

How our recipes are made.

Plain answers about who writes our recipes, where the figures come from, and what we can and can't tell you.

Written with AI

Our recipes are written with the help of AI, using everyday UK ingredients. They haven't been tested in a professional test kitchen, so use your own judgement on cooking times and seasoning for your oven, pans and taste.

Where the figures come from

Each ingredient is matched to an exact entry in the UK government's food composition data, McCance and Widdowson's Composition of Foods Integrated Dataset (CoFID), 2021. The figures are added up for the whole recipe and divided by the number of portions. Anything that isn't in that data, such as dried herbs and spices or a stock cube, is left out of the figures, and the recipe says so.

  • Every figure is an estimate. Real portions, brands and cooking change the numbers, so treat them as a guide.
  • Salt isn't shown, because the nutrition data we use doesn't include it for our ingredients.
  • Fibre, sugars and saturates are only shown when every ingredient in the recipe has a value.

Allergens: always check the label

Each recipe lists allergens its ingredients usually contain, and names packaged items whose labels you should check (stock cubes and gravy granules, for example). Brands and recipes vary and we can't see your packet, so always check the label on anything packaged yourself.

Food safety

Where it matters, a recipe includes basic food-safety steps, like cooling leftovers, getting them into the fridge within 2 hours and reheating only once, until steaming hot all the way through. For more, see the Food Standards Agency.

The photos are AI-generated

The pictures on our recipe pages and social posts are AI-generated illustrations of each dish, not photos of the finished recipe, and they're labelled that way.

Who they're for

Our recipes are general cooking ideas for adults (18+) in the UK. They're not medical or dietetic advice. If you have a medical condition, an eating disorder or a food allergy, speak to your GP or a registered dietitian before changing your diet.

Our coach is AI too

When you message MyPlatePrep, you're always talking with our AI coach, not a person. Its meal ideas and calorie estimates follow the same rules: estimates, not exact figures, and always check the label.
